DeKalb County CEO Swearing-In Ceremony
On Jan. 17, President Fenves welcomed over 500 people to the oath of office ceremony of the new DeKalb County CEO, Lorraine Cochran Johnson, at Glenn Memorial Church. Following the ceremony, a reception was held in Convocation Hall for invited guests of CEO Cochran Johnson.

Book Signing
On Feb. 6, OGCA in partnership with Barnes & Noble @ Emory, is proud to host a book signing and discussion with former DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond. Thurmond will discuss his latest book, James Oglethorpe, Father of Georgia: A Founder’s Journey from Slave Trader to Abolitionist, in conversation with the Rev. Dr. Robert M. Franklin Jr., professor at Emory’s Candler School of Theology and the inaugural James T. and Berta R. Laney Chair in Moral Leadership. This groundbreaking work explores Oglethorpe’s moral transformation and his influential relationships with Ayuba Suleiman Diallo and Olaudah Equiano, two formerly enslaved Black men who helped shape the abolitionist movement.

Violence Prevention Symposium
On Feb. 26, Emory is hosting and participating in a Violence Prevention Symposium in conjunction with The Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine, 100 Black Men of Atlanta, and The King Center. This symposium unites community leaders, public health experts, elected officials, law enforcement, civil rights organizations, and youth-focused groups to address violence as a public health crisis. We invite you to join us for this crucial conversation on violence prevention. You may register using this link.

State Affairs

The 2025 state legislative session is underway and will conclude, after 40 days, on April 4. Governor Kemp has strongly urged the General Assembly to pass meaningful tort reform and released his plan on January 30. Emory is pleased that the Governor’s proposal includes provisions important to the hospital community. The state affairs team is closely monitoring this and other issues important to Emory, while advocating for new state funding opportunities and protecting current funding lines.

Federal Affairs

Federal Affairs
The new Trump Administration and leaders in the 119th Congress are interested in using federal funding to enact policy changes. Emory is following proposals in a number of areas, including tax reform, nonprofit status, and DEI programs. Much of this work will take place through Congress’ legislative channels. President Trump has gotten off to a fast start, issuing a slew of executive orders. Most are broad statements of policy and vision, directing federal agencies to provide guidance in the coming months. The federal team is continuing to educate government officials about Emory’s work and the R1-NIH partnership important to Georgia, as well as working with leaders on campus to anticipate potential policy changes.

Our state and federal partners are interested in the work Emory is doing across Georgia and especially initiatives, programming, and research taking place in rural communities. Do you work on rural research issues or lead initiatives focused on rural Georgia? If so, we would like to partner with you. Please fill out our interest form and tell us about your work!

Happy New Year from the OGCA Team!
