| | | On August 17, twenty-two congressional staffers, as well as five state staffers, participated in a campus tour day. The theme of the visit was "Emory and its Partnerships," and President-elect Claire Sterk was on hand to welcome the staff to campus. We showcased the Emory partnerships that have an economic, social, and environmental impact on our community and state. After a morning touring our WaterHub, and hearing about our research portfolio and commercial successes, two concurrent afternoon tours took place to visit the Emory Healthcare Veterans Program and the Emory University Hospital Midtown. These staff tour experiences are critical to Emory's advocacy efforts. In order for legislative staffers to see first-hand the great work Emory is doing, the government affairs team worked with administrators and scientists across campus. The OGCA team expresses gratitude to the following people for the legislative staff visit's success: President-elect Claire Sterk, Ciannat Howett, David Stephens, Josh Lewis, Crystal Grant, Todd Sherer, Srilatha Edupuganti, Nadine Rouphael, Courtney Harris, and Erin Henrick. | More Photos |

| | Georgia Commission on Economic Development's Winship visit | On August 10, the Georgia Commission on Economic Development (GCED) worked to tell the story of how Georgia is making the world a healthier place. A particular focus was the value chain from health research to patient care. To that end, GCED asked that the Winship Cancer Institute host a media tour. After a welcome and overview by Winship leadership, the event included Winship researchers Larry Boise, PhD (multiple myeloma) and Adam Marcus, PhD (lung cancer) who conducted tours of their laboratories and discussed research advancements. This was an important opportunity for Emory to work side-by-side with the state to advance public support for research in Georgia.

| | | | Community Leaders Help Celebrate Emory University Hospital Expansion | On August 4, local officials and key community leaders helped Emory University Hospital celebrate a construction milestone in the building of its new addition, commonly referred to as the J-Wing. DeKalb County Commissioner Jeff Rader joined hospital executives, doctors, nurses, patients, families and other community leaders to celebrate construction reaching the ninth and final level of the new building. Charles H. "Pete" McTier, former president of the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation and Emory Trustee Emeritus, was also on hand to show support for the new addition. The 450,000-square-foot, $400 million, state-of-the-art facility will be home to 233 patient beds, including 23 critical care beds. The building will connect to Emory University Hospital via a two-story bridge crossing Clifton Road. This expansion will allow the hospital to expand its services and treat cancer and transplant patients in the new facility. Patients will be welcomed to the new facility beginning in the summer of 2017.

| NIH Funding | It is expected that Congress will pass a continuing resolution (CR) in September, resulting in flat funding for at least the first three months of the 2017 fiscal year. Emory has joined the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research on a letter thanking House and Senate Appropriations leadership for championing sustained, real growth in medical research funding. The letter urges enactment of the FY2017 Senate Committee-approved $34.1 billion for NIH, describing the ill effects that a long-term continuing resolution (CR) would have on research.
