Federal Affairs

Emory on the Hill
OGCA continues to work with House and Senate members as they move through the Reconciliation process. We expect to see language from the Senate by the end of this week as the July 4th deadline quickly approaches. At the same time, Congress is beginning the appropriations process. With government funding exhausted on Sept. 30th, the House has set an ambitious timeline for considering the 12 FY26 appropriations bills. The federal team continues to advocate on issues of importance to Emory, including access to student financial aid, investment in federal research and protection of the health care safety net.

SVPR Town Hall Recap: Answering Your Questions
On Tuesday, June 10, Emory leaders hosted a virtual Town Hall focused on recent developments in the federal research landscape. The session featured Deb Bruner, senior vice president for research; Cameron Taylor, vice president of government and community affairs; and Robert Nobles, vice president for research administration. Together, they addressed pre-submitted questions from the Emory research community, offering insights into evolving national policies and their implications for our work.

State Affairs

House Study Committee on Cancer Care Access
The House Study Committee on Cancer Care Access held its inaugural meeting on May 29 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville — hometown of Committee Chairman Representative Lee Hawkins. The session focused on Georgia’s cancer control strategies, recent cancer data and emerging issues such as thyroid cancer, providing valuable insights for our team.

On June 3, the committee convened again at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, where members heard testimony from a range of stakeholders, including the Georgia Department of Public Health, Department of Community Health, Georgia Hospital Association and Georgia Community Health Workers

OGCA will monitor this committee’s work throughout the summer and support Dr. Suresh Ramalingam, executive director of Winship Cancer Institute, in his role as a committee member.

Georgia Chamber Spring Government Affairs Meeting
During the off-session period, the State Affairs team uses the time to connect with legislators and fellow policy professionals from across the state, continuing to build and maintain relationships critical to Emory’s work. From June 4-6, the team attended the Georgia Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Spring Meeting of the Government Affairs Council. The event featured panels on key issues shaping Georgia’s policy landscape, including Governor Kemp’s priorities for his final legislative session, the role of bipartisanship under the Gold Dome and the latest developments in tort reform.

Community Affairs

Houston Healthcare
Houston Healthcare is now part of Emory Healthcare, marking an exciting new chapter for both institutions. This integration combines the innovation of an academic medical center with Houston Healthcare’s strong community connection in Central Georgia. With the addition of Houston Healthcare’s two hospitals, multiple outpatient facilities and skilled clinical teams, patients now have access to more doctors and locations for care.
