Election 2024

Congressional Results
On Nov. 6, news sites called the 2024 election for President-elect Donald Trump. In Georgia, all 13 incumbent members of Congress running for re-election won. Brian Jack will be our newest Congressman in District 3 (the only open seat due to Drew Ferguson’s retirement). As of this writing, party control of the U.S. House of Representatives remains up in the air.

Neither of Georgia’s Senators was up for re-election. Control of the U.S. Senate has flipped and will be controlled by the Republicans.

Emory will continue to strengthen its relationships with our delegation and re-establish relationships within the Trump administration. We look forward to working on priorities related to Emory’s mission, including reducing the administrative burden on health care providers, expanding telehealth access for our patients and limiting investment tax liability.

State House Results
Votes continue to be tallied, but, as of now, Rep. Ken Vance (R), Farooq Mughal (D) and Mesha Mainor (R) appear to be the only incumbents who have lost their seats at the state level.

DeKalb Polling Site @ 1599 Clifton Road
For the past three years, Emory has hosted a DeKalb County polling site on campus. During this past election cycle, the site processed 19,927 votes and was among the top five precincts (out of 20) for the highest number of votes in the county during advance voting. OGCA continues to partner with the Emory Votes Initiative (EVI) to secure volunteers for the polling site, which has accrued 84 volunteers and nearly 250 volunteer hours during this election cycle. Thanks to all who helped to make the Emory polling site at 1599 a continued success.

The Advance Voting dates for the runoff in DeKalb County are November 25-27 and Election Day is scheduled for December 3, 2024.

The election is over. Now what?

Federal Affairs

Rep. Buddy Carter Visit
The Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown was pleased to host Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) in October. As a pharmacist, Rep. Carter was interested in our unique pharmacy design and the timely and excellent care it helps us provide to our oncology patients. We discussed the IV shortage and the steps we have taken to mitigate patient impact.

Congressional Staff Day
On Oct. 30, a bipartisan group of 10 congressional staffers toured Emory University Hospital Midtown (EUHM) and the Winship Cancer Institute at EUHM. We explained Emory’s mission and structure, then drilled down to focus on the examples of patient care on the EUHM complex. Over lunch, staffers heard from some of Emory’s top researchers about how their work is impacting both Georgia and the world. The group also visited the EUHM NICU to see how congressionally directed funding, supported by several of these same offices, makes a real impact on lives.

Thanks to everyone who helped OGCA with these two important visits.

State Affairs

Medical Liability Reform
Emory continues to closely monitor medical liability reform efforts throughout the state, including participating in the Georgia Hospital Association’s Metro Atlanta Roundtable and engaging with state leaders at the Medical Association of Georgia’s informational lunch and discussion. Governor Kemp has indicated that tort reform will be a priority in the upcoming session, and OGCA will collaborate with state legislators and associations to promote medical liability reform.

Student Letters to the Statehouse
Every year, the Georgia Independent College Association (GICA) encourages students to write their state legislators expressing gratitude for state-funded scholarships, such as Zell and Hope. This fall, hundreds of Emory students shared their appreciation with state legislators, emphasizing how these funds have allowed them to succeed in their educational and personal lives. OGCA is happy to partner with GICA and the Office of Financial Aid on this project.

Community Affairs

Carnegie Reclassification
Efforts are underway for Emory to once again seek the Carnegie Foundation’s prestigious Community Engagement Classification. Members of the OGCA team serve on the university’s core group, guiding the application development process. In October, Emory’s Carnegie Advisory Committee, comprised of internal stakeholders and representatives from various community organizations, convened to review and assess data compiled as part of the university’s documentation. This work will continue through early 2025, when the final application will be formally submitted to Carnegie for consideration.

Atlanta Regional Commission Breakfast
Emory sponsored a table for the Atlanta Regional Commission’s annual State of the Region breakfast on Nov. 1.
