White House visits Emory Hillandale Hospital
On April 24, Senior Advisor to President Biden and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Tom Perez, DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Department of Health and Human Services Angela Ramirez and Rep. Hank Johnson toured Emory Hillandale Hospital to see the recent renovations funded by the American Rescue Plan Act. The funding was used to expand Emory Hillandale’s emergency department, renovate its intensive care units and replace its CT scanner. The OGCA team is proud to work with our delegation and the White House Administration to benefit the community. Watch the press conference of the event.

Naloxone bill signed by the Governor
On April 23, Governor Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 395 and other education-based initiatives into law. Sydney Wilkins, associate director of state affairs, attended the signing ceremony and received a pen from Governor Kemp. The bill includes language from Chair Sharon Cooper’s House Bill 1035, which Emory assisted in drafting and advocated for during the legislative session. This portion of the bill allows pharmacists to fill vending machines with opioid antagonists, such as naloxone, and for health practitioners to supply opioid antagonists without an established prescriber-patient relationship. The OGCA team was grateful to work with Chair Cooper, the Department of Community Health and the Department of Behavior Health and Developmental Disabilities to pass this life-saving legislation.

Community Affairs

State of DeKalb County address
On May 2, members of Emory attended the State of the County address. DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond delivered his final county address to business leaders, community partners and the public.

City of Atlanta job expo 
On April 30, Emory University, Emory Healthcare and the City of Atlanta held a joint job fair at Dunbar Recreation Center. Councilman Jason Dozier (pictured center below) and Emory University hosted the event that garnered 1,369 leads.  

Advance voting!
On April 29, advance voting started in DeKalb County. During advance voting (also called early voting), registered DeKalb County voters can vote at any DeKalb County advance voting site. Find more information on the DeKalb County site or sign up to volunteer at the DeKalb County polling site hosted by Emory.

DeKalb County CEO candidate forum 
On April 25, Kendra Price, associate director of community programs, moderated a panel discussion for the three candidates running for DeKalb County CEO. This forum was hosted by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, where Kendra serves as a board member.

Vogue voting edition: Nu Alpha Chapter
On April 11, Kendra Price, associate director of community programs, presented to a group of students from Emory’s Nu Alpha chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Kendra presented on the importance of voting and community service and shared information about volunteering at the DeKalb-hosted polling precinct at Emory.  

State of DeKalb Animals (SoDA)
On April 10, the OGCA team attended the State of DeKalb Animals (SoDA) address hosted by DeKalb County Commissioner Michelle Long Spears at the historic DeKalb Courthouse in downtown Decatur. This event featured Dr. Gregory Berns as the keynote speaker and is the first in a series of presentations highlighting the challenges faced by animal services in DeKalb County.

RSPH-CDC fireside chat 
On April 17, Rollins School of Public Health Dean Dani Fallin hosted Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Dr. Mandy Cohen to discuss the agency’s priorities post-COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Cohen outlined how CDC is responding to the evolving public health climate, including four focus areas for 2024: being ready to respond to any health threat; improving mental health; supporting young families; and developing workforce capacity. Given that the CDC is Emory’s neighbor and partner, the OGCA team continues to appreciate the collaboration with the agency.

In other news

Board of Visitors luncheon 
On April 24, the OGCA team attended the Board of Visitors’s luncheon, honoring Emory’s past and present ambassadors and volunteer leaders. President Gregory L. Fenves provided a university update to the attendees and answered questions from the crowd. OGCA team members — Cameron Taylor, Sydney Wilkins and Alex Wan — enjoyed the event with Sen. Elena Parent and Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver, among other distinguished guests.

On May 1, Carly Keller, manager of federal affairs, graduated from Georgia State University with a Master’s of Public Administration. We are proud of Carly! Please join us in congratulating her.
