Endless Frontier Act/U.S. Innovation and Competition Act
On June 9, the Senate passed the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (USICA) by a bipartisan vote of 68-32. It includes a boost to National Science Foundation funding and increases the overall U.S. investment in research. The House has indicated that it will pass its own version, and due to jurisdictional issues, legislation is proceeding through multiple committees. President Greg Fenves has written Members expressing Emory’s support for the increased research support included in the Senate bill as well as concerns about provisions that impact our researchers’ ability to collaborate with their foreign colleagues.
On June 15, the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee advanced the National Science Foundation for the Future Act (H.R. 2225) and the Department of Energy Science for the Future Act (H.R 3593). The bipartisan bills significantly boost authorized funding for the two agencies and make bold investments in scientific infrastructure and initiatives to broaden participation and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Infrastructure Package
Work continues on an infrastructure package in the U.S. House of Representatives. Emory was pleased to see one of our infrastructure priorities make it into the House bill (the Houston Mill intersection is on page 83), thanks to the support of Congresswoman Nikema Williams. With her position on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, we look forward to continuing to work with her as this legislation proceeds through the congressional process. |
