Rep. Lucy McBath Visit

On August 10, U.S. Representative Lucy McBath visited Emory Johns Creek Hospital (EJCH). After a walking tour of the hospital, including a visit to the EJCH Maternity Center, the Congresswoman discussed the COVID-19 response and associated economic impact with Marilyn Margolis, CEO of EJCH and Shellee Bradtmiller, director of women’s services at EJCH.

Update from the Capitol

On August 10, the U.S. Senate passed the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill in a 69-30 vote. After passing the infrastructure package, the Senate approved the Democrats’ $3.5 trillion FY22 budget resolution, which sets revenue and spending targets for a budget reconciliation bill and instructs committees to submit their reconciliation legislation by September 15. A topline summary of the resolution can be found here. As this legislation develops, Emory will continue to educate about significant domestic priorities. For example, in early August, Presidents Fenves and Cabrera wrote to Senators Ossoff and Warnock advocating for provisions that double the Pell Grant and increase funding for scientific and biomedical research.

Beginning on August 23, the U.S. House of Representatives will consider a rule designed to advance three legislative proposals: the Democratic budget resolution, bi-partisan infrastructure package, and a voting rights bill. Heavy legislative activity is expected to occur in the second half of September, when Congress also will have to pass legislation to raise the debt ceiling and ensure the government is funded through FY22. OGCA will continue to advocate for Emory priorities like RADX, NETEC and our COVID-related work

Community Engagement

Shots in the Shop

Emory’s own Kendra Price, OGCA Government Affairs Manager, is featured in this video outlining one of Congressman Hank Johnson’s community vaccination efforts.

Toco Hills Vaccination Event

On August 18, Emory again partnered with the Toco Hills Community Alliance for a vaccine clinic and distributed 2nd doses to those who attended. The first dose was administered on July 28. 36 community members were vaccinated at both events.

Clarkston Community Health Fair

On August 21, OGCA and Emory Healthcare (EHC) will partner with other community-based organizations during the Clarkston Community Health Fair. EHC will be onsite to provide blood pressure screenings to attendees, and Emory Eye Center will be conducting vision screenings. In addition to the Health Fair, there will be a distribution of school supplies and free hygiene packets, along with COVID-19 vaccines for ages 12+.
