Federal Affairs

Warnock Staff Visit

Last week, three staffers from Senator Raphael Warnock’s (D-GA) office joined Dr. Adam Marcus and Ryan Haumschild for a tour of the Winship Cancer Institute. The staffers saw ground-breaking research in our labs and learned about the personalized treatments that Emory offers patients. They were updated on the new Winship at Emory Midtown facility and the advanced-level cancer care it will provide to Georgians. Ryan provided an update on Emory’s 340B program and how discounts from pharmaceutical companies allow us to better serve our community, for example, through our medication assistance program. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Senator Warnock and his staff.

Advocating for our International Scholars

This week, OGCA shared its advocacy activities on behalf of international students, scholars, faculty, and researchers. We will continue to promote federal policies that support our community members from around the world.

State Affairs

Several new state laws went into effect on July 1. The following two bills directly impact Emory:

House Bill 617 by Rep. Chuck Martin (R-Alpharetta) allows student athletes to receive compensation for the use of the athlete's name, image, or likeness as long as such compensation is not in exchange for attending, participating, or performing at a particular postsecondary education institution. HB 617 requires the postsecondary institution to provide a financial literacy and life skills workshop at the beginning of the student's first and third academic years.

Senate Bill 85  by Sen. John Albers (R-Roswell) addresses hazing on college campuses. The new law requires applicable colleges to establish policies that provide for reporting, investigation, and adjudication of incidents of alleged hazing between students and student organizations. Please see Emory’s updated hazing policy here and find more information on Emory’s new hazing webpage here.

CCP Meeting

On June 24, the Clifton Community Partnership (CCP) held its quarterly meeting of the Advisory Group. Christa Acampora, Deputy Provost for Academic Affairs provided a review of Emory’s plans for fully opening the campus this fall. DeKalb Super District 6 Commissioner Ted Terry also shared some of his priority issues with the group; and Emory’s Interim Police Chief Cheryl Elliott had the opportunity to meet and converse with the neighborhood and community leaders.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Kimberly Jacob Arriola, PhD, MPH, new dean of Laney Graduate School, effective Sept. 1, 2021.
